How to Know if Someone is a Friend

Is it a friend or someone who has an advantage over you?

Recently while attending a funeral, the officiant spoke a powerful statement.  It resonated with me because I could relate with the theme of the statement.  Although I did not know the officiant,  he spoke as if he was speaking directly to me.  You see, I had been wrestling with this issue for quite some time - trying desperately to make sense of so many recent events in my own life.

This is what he said, "friends are those people who can share successes with you."  He continued his message by explaining that some people are only "alright" with us as long as they have an advantage over us.  They remain in good standing with us until the Lord begins to bless us with BETTER.

- better assignments

- better conditions

- and/or better things

Oftentimes when we are blessed with BETTER, those same people (who once favored us) begin to despise us.  They begin to act "funny".  Interestingly enough, they are the same people they were before BETTER showed up.  The difference is - their other side has been revealed.

Remember that the Most High God allows us to experience many situations to teach us to fully rely on HIM.  These situations remind us that HE is truly the FRIEND who sticks closer than a brother.

Proverbs 18:24

(A man that hath friends must show himself friendly, and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.)

  2. You're welcome. When the officiant made the statement, it provided clarity and it affirmed what I already thought. Sometimes, it takes another person to really "drive it home". Blessings!
